Do Air Filters Really Reduce Pollution?

Air filters can't completely eradicate the root cause of air pollutants in the home. For instance, some air filters can help reduce mold odor, but they won't eliminate the problem. People must take steps to remove the source of pollutants and improve air quality. Ionizing air purifiers can remove polluting particles from the air, but they won't have any effect on chemical exhaust fumes from cars.

Furthermore, as a side effect they generate ozone, which is a lung irritant. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not recommend using these types of air purifiers or any air purifiers that generate ozone. Recent research has also revealed a stronger link between indoor and outdoor exposure to air pollution and cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and ischemic heart disease, as well as between air pollution and cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality, air quality inside homes, offices, schools, nurseries, public buildings, health facilities, or other public and private buildings where people spend much of their lives is an essential factor in people's healthy lives and well-being.

Air filtration requires complex machinery that can filter even the smallest hazardous particles floating in the air. However, Bionaire does not indicate how long it will take for the unit to actually filter all the air in that room. Most of them are capable of filtering particles as small as 0.3 microns, which covers the problematic PM2.5 category, while some HEPA filters are capable of removing particles as small as 0.1 microns, which means that they remove much more of the even more dangerous contaminants that are lost standard. Over a period of 6 months, the effectiveness of air filters in capturing particles and allergens was measured.

Currently available air purifiers typically use a multilayer filter system often comprised of a pre-filter, a carbon filter, an antibacterial filter, and a HEPA filter. Many basic air purifiers that claim to have these filters inside only have an almost negligible amount of activated carbon inside them and therefore naturally only provide a symbolic gesture of protection. Ozone generating air purifiers are devices that purposely create ozone to clean the air through chemical interactions that alter the compounds of pollutants, but this is also the mechanism by which ozone exerts harmful health effects. A HEPA filter was used for a six-week period and a low-efficiency air filter for the second six-week period. Air cleaning units have air volume limitations that are identified by a “Clean Air Supply Rate (CADR).

In air filters, the air was first filtered by a coarse-grained pre-filter, followed by a Rota filter, in which small dust particles were captured by high-speed rotation. Some filters are reusable and washable, but require meticulous maintenance, so they are not usually found in the most effective air purifiers. As air moves through the filter, contaminants and particles are captured, and clean air is expelled into the living space. Molekule PECO technology can also destroy common allergens such as pollen and mold to help reduce indoor air pollution concentrations in your home. The Appliance Manufacturers Association (AHAM) recommends that the CADR of your air purifier be equal to at least two-thirds of the area of the room.
